Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to raise money? Isn't my attendance enough support?
Walk MS is a fundraiser. Money raised funds cutting-edge research and supports people with MS and their families. While we do our best to secure donations, there are still many expenses that the chapter has to cover to host an event of this scale. Please help us defer these costs by collecting as many donations as you can!

Do I have to choose my distance before the day of the walk?
No, you may decide that day how far you walk. Each of our walk sites offer at least two different route options ranging from 1 to 7 miles.

If I'm on a team, do I register differently?
Team captains must register first and choose a team name. Remaining team members register individually by choosing to join the pre-existing team. Each team member’s donations are calculated separately and then factored into the team total, which is automatically calculated.

How long will it take to finish the walk?
That depends on your pace. The average person walks two to three miles per hour. Select a route based on how far and long you want to walk. You can make this decision at the event.

What do I need to bring?
Bring a completed and signed walker check-in envelope and donations you’ve collected. Your check-in envelope is mailed to you if you register at least a week before the event. Otherwise, one will be available for you at the event.

If I bring along my spouse or child, must they also register?
Yes! Each participant must either pre-register on our webpage, or complete a registration form the day of the walk.

Will there be refreshments?
Fruit and water are always provided at each Walk MS site. Our committees do a great job of reaching out to local companies to donate additional food and snacks for our participants and volunteers to enjoy.

How do I turn in donations?
We recommend turning in donations right away. The faster you turn in your donations, the faster the National MS Society can begin putting them to good work. Making an online donation is the quickest and easiest way to contribute to Walk MS. You can also submit your donations by mail. Please mail in any donations with a deposit slip to:

National MS Society, Greater IL Chapter
Attn: Walk MS
525 West Monroe St.
Suite 900
Chicago, IL 60661

Do not send cash. Instead write a check for the amount of cash that was donated, or make an online donation via credit card. Include any remaining donations in your check-in envelope and bring it with you on event day.

When will I receive my prize[s]?
If you meet the suggested fundraising minimum of $125, you will receive your official Walk MS t-shirt at the event. Post event prizes can be earned based upon your overall individual fundraising. For more information, check out our Prizes and Incentives Page.

What if I cannot finish the entire route?
There will be support along the route to bring participants back to the festival site.

What if there is inclement weather?
Like the effects of MS go on, so do we — rain, snow or shine. Please dress in layers accordingly, and be sure to check the weather prior to attending the event.

Can I bring my dog to the event?
Since Walk MS is a family event, you are welcome to bring your dog. If you do bring your dog, make sure it is not agitated by large groups and noise, and is kept on a leash at all times. Please be courteous of our walk site locations and the rest of our participants; make sure that you clean up after your pet.
